The problem with books...
Rob's book-buying problem began way back in High School. With his lawn mowing money burning hot in his pocket, he rode his bike across town to the bookstore, and, after hours of agonizingly careful deliberation, came home, his backpack laden with a hefty tome on the subject of C++.
When he got home, he showed it to his mom, who asked how much it cost.
"You spent $55 on a book!" she replied. "What's it printed on, gold leaf?"
With buyer's remorse just beginning to set in, he sheepishly affirmed his purchase.
Nevertheless, his book buying habit continued unabated, but when he got his first internship the next summer, his mom stopped questioning (at least about the books).
After many years, despite culling many of the older books, he has now accumulated a respectable technical library of more than three hundred volumes.
This leads to a practical problem (beyond the obvious storage concerns): There is absolutely no way that he will ever be able to read all those books! And, even if he could, he would forget most of what he read.
Developers face a constant need to learn and retain information, both from technology advancing and job requirements shifting.
Books are swell, but they suffer from a critical scalability flaw: A book is only useful if you read it and remember it.
Rob thinks cheat sheets are part of the solution. To learn a new topic, you don't need to start from scratch, but you do need a concise and thorough reference with all the key points framed in a way that is tailored to your past experience.
This is where Tech Hopper Professional Cheat Sheets come in. Each is specifically designed to help experienced developers—not students—jump quickly from topic to topic. We assume that this is not your first rodeo and design our cheat sheets to give you just what you need and to be immediately accessible.
